My, how the kids have grown. This young ruby-throated hummingbird started coming to my feeders a couple of months ago and has now decided all 3 feeders – and the surrounding 100 feet of airspace – is his turf. He just spent 3 rainy days in a frenzy trying to defend all 3 feeders from 3 intruders (one of whom I suspect is his mother…shame, shame, sonny).
The bunny showed up six weeks ago – then, he was only about 8 inches long; now he’s almost 12. I’ve dubbed him Crazy Ivan because he will suddenly sit up on his haunches, twitch his ears once or twice, then dash back and forth 5 or 6 times, 20 or 30 feet straight-line, then jump and do a mid-air reverse to complete his dash. Then he’ll sit down where he started and calmly start munching on clover, like all that running-about business must have been some other crazy rabbit. (Yeah, it’s probably preservation instinct, but it looks crazy-rabbit to me.)
These two sat like this for about ten minutes – neither acted threatened or nervous, just really curious. Not sure what they expected, but now they just ignore each other. Detente or just no fun anymore?
